Video Sequence: WIDE/MEDIUM/TIGHT and sometimes, EXTRA TIGHT
Interviewing Reminders: Framing: EYES ON THIRD/TALKING SPACE/BUST UP Avoid: PROFILES (Let us see BOTH eyes) Watch: Backlighting--do not shoot INTO the light source
Do not PAN: HOLD your shots steady Let the action happen within you shot, do not feel like you must follow every shot
Stories for the web: It's fine to hear the question being asked Shoot video that goes with the subject of the interview Use wide shots sparingly
Do stories that might not be done otherwise--quirky characters, interesting "sidebars" or short segments that relate to the main story, but bring new information.
Web stories should stand alone and not rely on the print piece to make sense
Make sure any graphics you use are large enough to easily read, and are on screen long enough that the slowest reader can still digest it
Make sure you are close enough to your interview subject to get decent audio. The Flip cams do not have headphone inputs, as you know. So get close, and pay attention to competing sounds.
Keep the basics in mind as you utilize the new tools at your disposal. Great conversations, strong writing, natural sound, and those little surprises that make your stories memorable will all help you achieve maximum impact.
